If I haven’t explained it before now, forgive me. I’m working on a group of large paintings where I try to caustically convey a toddler/tabloid style argument between some of the worlds cultural giants.
So, in the 70’s, great friends Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon had come to the end of their time together. I don’t know what happened, but I imagine they were both drinking and irritated each other then it went to actually i don’t like him anyway sort of a state. And for the remainder of the 70’s that was that.
By the time the 80’s came about there are reports of them verbally attacking each others works, to their contemporaries and trusted friends and not trusted friends. I enjoy this gossipy aspect, adding yet more depth to these two undoubted geniuses.
My paintings bring two of their most famous works from the 80’s (in this instance it’s “Standing by the Rags” by Lucien Freud) to be viewed in locations that stimulate my interest or in some way relate to their character. So that you can decide for yourself. Were they shit in the 80’s. Nope.
